A group of gangs are threatening the security on the Juba-Nimule highway by shooting and robbing the civilians, an incident that left five people dead.
The police spokesperson, James Monday Enocka told the press on Wednesday in Juba that some criminal gangs are now resorting to attack people on the highway.He said on Sunday the gangs attacked a car that was taking school examination to Torit and killed one person and injured two others, Radio Bakhita reported.
Mr Monday added that on the same Sunday the gangs ambushed two vehicles on the Juba-Nimule road and killed three people and injured four foreigners.
He said again on Tuesday gang ambushed two motorbike riders killing one of them and took with them the motorbike.
Mr Monday said the Inspector general of Police and his senior directors visited the scene on Tuesday.
The spokesperson said the IGP visit was to inspect the security situation and deploy more forces to search and bring the culprits to book.
He added that additional forces including auxiliary police forces, CID and CES police supported by the SPLA were deployed to the area.
Mr Monday said regretted and condemned the criminal acts which resulted into loss of lives and properties of both national and foreigners.
The spokesperson told the foreigners that the security situation in the country is being handled by the security personnel despite isolated criminal cases.
Mr Monday conveyed South Sudan government condolences to the republic of Uganda and Kenya.
He said free movement of people and goods to South Sudan will be protected by the authority of the country and that South Sudan Police Service is committed to its mandate of providing security in the country.
