South Sudan ruling party set strategies to permanently solve the persistence food gap in the Great Kapoeta, Eastern Equatoria.

SPLM deputy Secretary General Ann Itto disclosed to the press during her visit to the three Kapoeta counties that the hunger affected areas should be relieved in order to achieve the objective of President Salva Kiir to have food security in the Country by 2014, Radio Emmanuel reported.

Dr Itto discussed with the local people the introduction of short term crop varieties and diversify income generation in Kapoeta Counties as a lasting solution.

She said short term yielding crop varieties that have been developed for areas with limited rainfalls could save hunger stricken Kapoeta Counties in times of draught.

Dr Itto insisted that various options must be found for the people of Greater Kapoeta to have food at a table by using their plenty animal resources.

She said persistence of hunger is not an indication of poverty in Greater Kapoeta.

Eastern Equatoria minister for Agriculture, Forests and Cooperatives, Mark Akio Ukinbul, said the state government planned to introduce draught resistant crops like cassava to increase food produce in semi-arid areas.

The Ministry of Agriculture deployed extension officers to advise farmers to clear the fields for new crops that were not cultivated before to improve food production in Greater Kapoeta counties.
