The US Department of State Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2012 said South Sudan security force committed serious human rights abuses including extrajudicial killings, torture, rape, intimidation, and other inhumane treatment of civilians.

The report singled out lack of access to justice, including arbitrary arrest, prolonged pretrial detention, and corruption within the justice sector among others.

Human Rights Watch Researcher Skye Wheeler said the 2012 human rights report on South Sudan from the U.S. government reflects the deteriorating human rights situation in the country.

She added that South Sudan should quickly respond to the report with a renewed commitment to human rights.

Ms Wheeler said the government should ensure proper investigations into a numbers of outstanding abuses by security forces.
