Rumbek residents gave the thumbs up to the decision to close down home breweries to reduce the excessive consumption of “merisa”, the local brew.

Lakes State Caretaker Governor Matur Chut Dhuol announced the dry law during a rally at Rumbek Freedom Square after it was claimed that some tribal clashes were caused by alcohol consumption.

Some people told Good News Radio that Mr Chut made the right decision.

Samuel Kedit, working as a clerk in Rumbek Central County, is happy with the decision.

He said many more people died of alcohol than those benefitting from it.

He added that alcoholism was a very dangerous problem.

Stephen Matur Dhal advised those brewing alcohol to engage in other businesses because alcohol killed many people in Rumbek.

He noted that youths were drinking at the cattle camps and killing each other due to alcohol.

Many widows and other vulnerable women who brewed alcohol in Rumbek for survival have problems now to feed their children.

The caretaker governor ordered that those found drunk have to be taken to the police to reveal where they bought “merisa.”
