St Mary’s Pupils in Yambio went on strike on Wednesday morning protesting against a teacher’s dismissal.

School Headmistress Nakalembe Betty told Radio Anisa that she received three letters from the Diocesan Education head office on Tuesday sacking two teachers and appointing a third to assist her in the school administration.

Diocesan Education Secretary Elizabeth Waraga explained that several reports from reliable sources accused teacher Ganiko Gerry of unacceptable behaviour with female students.

The Headmistress said teacher Gerry after receiving the dismissal letter instigated upper class pupils to strike.

Classes were interrupted, all pupils rushed shouting to the playground, some collected stones, others raised banners reclaiming for Gerry to come back.

The diocesan education officer agreed with the school administration to send the pupils home to calm down the situation and called for an immediate meeting with the parents and teachers at 10:00 AM on Thursday.

St Mary Primary School is owned and run by the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio.
