SOUTH SUDAN MAKES RULE OF LAW INROADS

South Sudan made considerable progress in strategic fields of rule of law, establishing a High Level Panel to address prolonged and arbitrary detentions and enhance access to justice, the registration and screening of Prison and Police staff and the development of a National Security Policy.

The assessment comes from Dmitry Titov, Assistant UN Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions, Department of Peacekeeping Operations in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Mr Titov is in Juba to discuss with the Government, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, and bilateral partners the challenges in the strategic areas of justice, military justice, corrections an police, among other issues.

He added that he was in Juba also to express condolences to the Governments of India, South Sudan and Kenya for the loss of five peacekeepers and seven civilians in an ambush in Jonglei State.

The UN representative on Tuesday met with Vice President Riek Machar Teny and the Minister of National Security Oyay Deng.
