Hundreds of students from Torit Day Secondary School turned up at Bishop’s House in Torit to pay their respects to Bishop Johnson Akio Mutek, who died unexpectedly on Monday in a Nairobi Hospital.
Some of the students fainted while others sang amidst tears and sobs during a short prayer conducted by Fr. Kamilo Afore.Teacher Paul Anyahwo, who led the students, described the life of Bishop Akio Mutek as a mirror and screen for the people in the diocese.
Mr Anyahwo says everyone has to make a choice in life.
He commented Bishop Akio for making a childhood choice for the priesthood by joining seminary after primary school.
Fr Kamilo Afore, the pastoral coordinator of the Catholic Diocese of Torit, lamented the sudden death of the bishop saying it left the Christians helpless.
He said Bishop Akio wished to celebrate Easter with the Christians before going for a routine medical check-up in Nairobi but God had other plans.
The remains of Bishop Akio arrive on Thursday morning in Juba and they will be flown to Torit after a requiem mass in St Theresa’s Cathedral.
