The chairperson of the Constitutional Review Commission said on Wednesday that the Transitional Constitution might stay on if the Constitutional Conference and Parliament failed to approve the Permanent Constitution.

Akol Man Tier said in a public lecture at the University of Juba that there was no cover for the possibility of both Constitutional Conference and Parliament failed to approve the final text, and what should be done.

He added that there was a dangerous assumption that the Conference and the Parliament would approve the draft.

Prof Akol said if the two bodies failed to adopt the draft charter then the Transitional Constitution would continue until a replacement was approved.

He said the Transitional Constitution did not have an expiry date.

Prof Akol was presenting a paper at a public lecture series titled “Constitution making process in South Sudan, from Transitional Constitution to Permanent Constitution” at the University of Juba.
