The ruling party in South Sudan wants to raise the quota of women representation in public life in the upcoming extraordinary Convention.
SPLM Deputy Secretary-General Anne Itto Leonardo told CRN that the delegates will vote a proposal to increase women’s representation from 25 to 30 percent.She said the SPLM Liberation Council last March proposed to have a woman among the three deputy chairpersons √ɬê if the proposal is passed.
Dr Itto added that other women could contest for chairperson or deputy.
Dr Itto said many women were qualified for national leadership and that there were women who would compete with men in various constituencies.
She added that half of the party members were women and they needed to concentrate on national issues to make a difference.
Dr Itto called on women to present themselves as capable people who could do things better that men rather than considering themselves as inferior.
The SPLM Extraordinary Convention takes place at the end of February to revise the party’s key documents.
The SPLM National Ordinary Convention is scheduled to take place in May 2013 to elect the party’s leadership.
