Returnees at Abubu settlement near Rumbek are grateful to God for protecting them from last Friday’s inter-communal clashes that claimed many lives.
Abubu returnees’ camp is two kilometres East of Rumbek, one of the battle grounds during last week’s confrontation between the two sections of Kuei and Rup of Rumbek Central County, Good News Radio reported.Alberto Agok Maloch, the headman at the returnees’ camp, said on Monday that the warring groups advanced from North and South of the camp exchanging bullets.
Mr Agok added that the attack took them by surprise and they had to put children under beds to protect them from stray bullets.
He said their survived at the hands of God that day.
John Garang, a teacher at Abubu Returnees camp, said the belligerent groups looted some blankets, police uniforms and phones.
He added that some of the returnees were slapped.
Last week’s Inter-communal fight in Rumbek is claimed lives of over 50 people and several others wounded.
The army is now in control and security is good for the last two days.
