A team from the National Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries headed by the director of research arrived in Yambio to carry out a field study on tsetse flies.

Director of research Erneyo Bernado told Anisa Radio that the team came with technicians and professionals from both South Sudanese and Sudanese ministries of animal resources and fisheries to study tsetse flies in the Equatoria belt.

He said the samples of the research would be sent to Khartoum or Makerere for laboratory analysis.

Yambio Commissioner Kuzee John Elia welcomed the team.

He explained that sleeping sickness persisted in the county since early 1970s but after the long standing war no proper screening took place for tsetse flies.

Mr Kuzee acknowledged the efforts of MSF-Spain that used to fight sleeping sickness by treating patients and setting traps for catching tsetse flies in Yambio and other parts of the state.

He said he suspected the presence of tsetse flies in Nakpangau stream in Yambio town.

Mr Kuzee urged the national government to help because MSF has stopped its operations in the area.
