Kumbur Payam leaders in Nuba Mountains have formulated laws to govern their own people.

The decision followed repeated violence in the community that saw rampant use of arms and unaccepted behaviour.

Payam Executive Officer Kuku Barnaba said leaders have been discussing a number of issues for the past two months and formulated some laws for the Tira community.

Mr Barnaba said the leaders debated the issue of random killings.

He said serious killings were referred to the courts while the leaders settled minor cases.

Mr Barnaba said the Tira leaders also imposed limits for dowry prices: three cows, five goats and 1,000 pounds.

He said dowry prices were out of control making marriages very costly and difficult.

The payam executive officer added that the leaders were trying to make life easier for the Tira community.
