Over 500 teachers started a yearly two-month professional training to improve their teaching skills.

Bill Firman Ð the education coordinator of Solidarity with South Sudan Ð told CRN News via e-mail 155 teachers are being trained in Malakal, 155 in Yambio, 70 in Rumbek, 88 in Agok and 32 in Leer.

The in-service training takes four years and at the end the successful attendants area certified by the Government.

Br Firman said the demand was so great that Solidarity with South Sudan had to double classes in their facilities in Malakal and Yambio.

Later in the year Solidarity shall recommence pre-service programmes to train new teachers.

Br Firman added that the vision of those who set up Solidarity with South Sudan, supported by many religious congregations and donors, is having an important impact on the quality of education available in the country.

Solidarity with South Sudan is a Catholic umbrella group involving more than 100 religious institutes to train teachers, certified nurses, pastoral agents and farmers.
