Members of Central Equatoria Legislative Assembly expressed their anger over the Governor’s decision to swear in the new cabinet without the MPs’ approval and the unilateral dismissal of several education officials.

Last week, Governor Clement Wani Konga reshuffled the cabinet of Central Equatoria state, created two new ministries and, on Friday, swore in the new cabinet including the heads of the new ministries.

Speaker Naptali Hassan Gale told Bakhita Radio over the phone that the Assembly was going to decide whether the Governor had the constitutional authority to install a new cabinet without the House’s approval.

Governor Konga dismissed the Director General of Education, the state’s head teacher, and several teachers from Juba Day Secondary School over the violent incidents of last October.

MP Peter Duku said the Governor made a mistake dismissing the officials unilaterally.

The educators were sacked due to an October 31 incident at Juba Day School. One female student and one teacher were wounded by security forces when students tried to burn construction material intended for a private hospital building.

Students were angry that the private hospital was to be built in part of their school compound.

The Governor ordered the dismissed officials to pay the medical bills of the injured and reimburse Dr Dario Kuron of the construction material destroyed by the students.

Neither the Governor nor the Deputy Governor could be reached for a comment.
