A number of teachers started the second phase of in-service training in the Catholic diocese of Rumbek.

John Maluk Mathen works for the diocesan department of education. He told Good News Radio on Tuesday that the in-service training aims to build the capacity of teachers currently serving in different schools in the diocese.

He said the training session is given by Solidarity with South Sudan and lasts for eight weeks.

Mr Maluk added that most teachers in South Sudan are bellow professional standards and the in-service training lasts for four years.

Teachers who complete their four-year training successfully will be awarded with a certificate by the Government.

Mr Maluk appealed to the community to support the teachers.

He urged the county education officials to cooperate with teachers who are currently undergoing in-service training.

Teacher Deborah Agum Mathen from Cueibet Primary School said women should be given equal education opportunities to equal the number of educated men.

She acknowledged the importance of in-service training for teachers.

More than 60 teachers from Lakes and Warrap states are taking part in the in-service training in Rumbek.

Solidarity with South Sudan is carrying out in-service training in a number of places including Agok, Leer and Yambio.
