The international community is using diplomatic pressure as leverage on Sudan to implement the cooperation agreements signed in September in Addis Ababa with South Sudan.

Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told CRN that there was pressure on both countries to reach an agreement as the UN Security Council threatens to impose a binding solution if they failed to resolve issues of Abyei and the border.

Dr Marial said the visit of top regional diplomats, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn – who chairs the IGAD – to Khartoum and Juba, helped both Presidents to agree on today’s summit in Addis Ababa.

He added that the international and regional bodies have leverages to persuade both leaders to implement the cooperation agreements.

Salva Kiir Mayardit and Omar al Bashir left today for Addis Ababa for a presidential summit in a bid to overcome the bottleneck on the implementation of the three-month old agreements.
