An international medical charity said on Monday that an unprecedented malaria outbreak affecting Northern Bahr El Ghazal has been brought under control.
Doctors without Borders or MSF explained in a statement that between March and August over 1,600 children were admitted to Aweil Hospital with malaria, compared to 688 at the same period last year.In September, the mortality rate from malaria in the children ward skyrocketed to eight percent, but has been brought down to acceptable levels.
MSF Project Coordinator Abdelkader Ilidjane said malaria has been overwhelming health facilities in and around Aweil this year.
He said heavy rains began earlier than usual and the organizations responsible for mosquito nets distribution were unable to hand them out before malaria took epidemic levels.
Aweil this year experience hug floods with people moving to temporary poor shelters along the roads and railway.
