The US Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration is visiting South Sudan and Kenya during one week to assess protection and assistance for refugees in both countries.

Kenya hosts some 630 thousand refugees mostly from Somalia while more than 200 thousand Sudanese took refuge in South Sudan.

The US Department of State said in a media note that Anne Richard will visit Kakuma Camp in Kenya to assess health reproductive programs.

In Nairobi, she will meet with staff who prepare refugee applicants for resettlement in the US.

In South Sudan, Ms Richard will meet refugees and humanitarian staff to assess the new neutral settlements being built and the emergency needs of new arrivals.

With the arrival of the dry season a new wave of Sudanese refugees is expected in Upper Nile and Unity State camps.

In Juba, Ms Richard will hold meetings with government officials and representatives from international and nongovernmental organizations.

The visit starts today in Kenya.
