The administration of Wau Teaching Hospital, in Western Bahr El Ghazal State, has launched its first fistula operation campaign targeting over hundred women in the region.

Fistula is a complication during delivery due to narrow pelvic passage or underage pregnancy causing rapture in the urethra.

Fistula victims suffer from uncontrolled passage of urine and are usually ostracized.

Wau Teaching Hospital Director General James Ukello Morgan told Voce of Hope that the operations start on Wednesday and 22 women are already in the facility.

He said two gynaecologist surgeons will carry out the operations and the patients will be assisted by two nurses trained in Ethiopia.

Dr Ukello said the operation has a 90 percent success rate.

He explained that fistula can lead to divorce.

Dr Ukello urged women suffering from fistula incontinence to turn up for the surgery in Wau.

The Director General appealed to the public to take the opportunity to bring all fistula cases to be operated in Greater Bahr el Ghazal, Upper Nile or any other part of South Sudan.

The surgery is free of charge.

Dr Ukello said patients suffering from fistula should be taken to Wau Teaching Hospital within two weeks to be operated upon.
