A group of Muslim volunteers from Darfur want to rebuild Saints Peter and Paul Catholic cathedral in Torit destroyed during the civil war.
Sudan Sunrise Project Director Rudwan Dawod said Muslim volunteers want to rebuild the Catholic cathedral that was destroyed twice by Sudanese forces during the two decades civil war, Radio Emmanuel reported.Mr Dawod, who hails from Darfur, told Christians on Sunday that the Church was destroyed by self-centred politicians under the pretence of Islam, a religion that promotes peace and love.
He says true Moslems could not destroy a Church.
Mr Dawod called for time to heal past wounds and reconcile the people of South Sudan and Sudan to avoid a repeat of violence.
He said rebuilding the Cathedral was a symbol of hope and peace for both Muslim and Christian communities in Eastern Equatoria.
Mr Dawod worked with the late NBA legend Manute Bol on humanitarian and democracy efforts in Sudan.
He is also active with the Girifna Movement, a non-violent youth movement calling for democracy and human rights in Sudan.
The Cathedral reconstruction project will bring together Muslims from Sudan, South Sudan, and the United States.
