The UN human rights office demanded on Friday that Sudan investigates the killing of five UN peacekeepers in Darfur, including an attack with mortar fire and automatic weapons on a convoy.

The convoy was heading to a village to check out reports of a massacre of 70 civilians.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said Sudan must promptly launch a serious investigation to bringing the perpetrators to justice the killers of a South African and four Nigerian peacekeepers in a convoy attack on October 2 in Darfur region.

She told reporters on Friday in Geneva that unknown assailants ambushed a UNAMID convoy of military police and civilian staff as it headed to the village of Hashaba in North Darfur to investigate the reported killing of 70 civilians there last month.

One peacekeeper was killed and three were injured in the attack.

Ms Shamdasani said Sudan must investigate the killings of the five peacekeepers because it is responsible for protecting the African Union-UN mission’s staff.
