An unknown disease is killing a great number of cows around Aweil, in Northern Bahr El Ghazal, despite of a cattle vaccination campaign taking place across the state.

The deaths come weeks after rains ceased in the area.

Kuach Kuach Deng owns more than 50 cows. He told Internews Network that he lost nearly 20 animals in just one month.

He said the sick animals lose appetite and the legs swell.

Mr Kuach complained that the herders have to buy the medicines because veterinary staff did not come to the village.

Officials at the state ministry of animal resource say they have launched a vaccination campaign in five counties.

Northern Bahr El Gazal Deputy Director for Animals Health and Diseases Control, Samuel Ajing Uguak, urged cattle keepers to take their cows to vaccination centres.

He said there are 1.6 million heads of cattle in the state and vets have vaccinated around ten percent already.

Mr Ajing said the unknown disease killing cows in the state could come from seasonal changes.
