One African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur or UNAMID officer died and three others were injured in an ambush on Wednesday morning near Hashaba in North Darfur, bringing to five the number of peacekeepers killed this month.
The UNAMID convoy was attacked by unknown gunmen on its way to Hashaba North to assess the situation following recent reports of violence in that area, the Mission said in a press release.UNAMID personnel came under a combination of automatic and mortar fire by unidentified assailants.
Joint Chief Mediator Aichatou Mindaoudou condemned the attack.
She said the attacks will not shake UNAMID’s resolve to fulfil its mandate and help the people of Darfur.
Ms Mindaoudou called on the Government of Sudan to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Forty-three peacekeepers were killed since the initial deployment of UNAMID on December 31, 2007.
