The national minister for Higher Education signed a memorandum of understanding with his Egyptian equal to support higher education in South Sudan.
Minister Peter Adwok Nyabak told the press on Wednesday in Juba that the agreement strengthened cooperation between the two ministries.He thanked the Egyptian government for offering 500 scholarships to South Sudanese students.
Dr Adwok said the President of Egypt is concerned about education in South Sudan.
The minister explained that the austerity budget cut off assistance to South Sudanese students in Egypt, Uganda, Kenya and Malaysia.
He added that the government is going to decide whether to ask students to contribute towards their higher education.
Dr Adwok said the 500 scholarships include postgraduate courses for lecturers who want to pursue master and PhD degrees.
