The national transport ministry launched a civil aviation security project in partnership with European Union with a budget of 12.5 million Euros or some 62.5 million South Sudanese pounds.
European Union Aviation Mission in South Sudan chief Lasse Christensen said the project launched on Thursday does not have an executive mandate to perform security checks that are the responsibility of the national authorities.He said the mission will assist South Sudan to strengthen aviation security to prevent unlawful interference against airports, aircrafts, crew and passengers.
The national deputy minister for transports Mayom Kouch Malek said the European Mission will strengthen security at Juba International Airport through advise, monitoring technical assistance, training and coordination.
The mission will last for 19 months.
Mr Kuoc announced that South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority should start its operations soon.
He added that the new airport terminal under constructions should be ready by January and become operational in February.
