Western Bahr El Ghazal State Traffic Police Administration reaffirmed its readiness to dismiss any traffic officers taking bribes from drivers during an ongoing operation to organize traffic on Wau streets.
The Traffic Police is carrying out a 40-day massive campaign to crackdown unregistered vehicles.Traffic Police spokesperson Deng John Akot told Voice of Hope that the crackdown followed state government’s directives to organize public transport.
The crackdown is also meant to curb on abusers who transport up to three people on one motorcycle.
Captain Akot confirmed that the crackdown has some economic impact on drivers’ pockets.
A license for a motorcycle costs 350 pounds plus insurance and taxes.
Captain Akot said the Traffic Police have so far managed to control more than 90 motorbikes.
He added that the crackdown was not done to collect money but to prevent accidents and preserve lives.
Captain Akot affirmed that the Traffic Police administration was ready to dismiss any officer proved to have demanded bribes from drivers.
The crackdown began in August 28 at the streets of Wau Town.
