Traditional chiefs, directors of state department, officials from Directorate of Nationality, Passport and Immigration, Judiciary and NGOs staff on Friday attended a one-day Nationality, Citizenship and Statelessness.
United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) organized the workshop to implement its mandate to protect refugees and displaced people in order to preserve the rights of nationality and identity of South Sudanese citizens.UNHCR chief in Wau Elisa Carlaccini said capacity building of stakeholders is essential to institutionalize the Nationality, Passport and Immigration Directorate to make it operational.
The head of Western Bahr el Ð Ghazal Directorate of Nationality, Passport and Immigration, Hussein Daud Jano told the chiefs that their work of identifying citizens was critical in the process of issuance of citizenship documents.
The workshop meant to prepare stakeholders to start issuing Nationality Certificate and Passport in the Wau office.
