Official from the General Education Ministry said today in Juba that the government of South Sudan has put 2040 as year where by every citizen can be able to read and write.
Undersecretary Deng Deng Hoc Yai told the press that the newly developed document Vision 2040 and that one of its six strategic goals is to build an educated and informed nation.He said this means that by 2040 all South Sudanese would be literate, and that this now is the dateline for achieving illiteracy eradication.
Mr Deng added that eradication of illiteracy is more urgent and there is need to address it sooner.
United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, Head of Office in South Sudan, Salah Khaled said illiteracy eradication needs commitment from government officials and all the members of communities.
He added that MPs need to commit to this cause and that they should ensure money are allocated for literacy programmes.
Mr Khaled said the literacy has impact on health, agriculture and entire economy and even challenge for national security.
He explained that illiterate people can easily be influenced by others because they cannot read and develop their opinions.
Mr Khaled added that such people are susceptible for any kind of influence that can lead to conflict.
UNESCO designate September 8 as the world Literacy Day.
