UNESCO EARMARKS HALF MILLION DOLLAR TO FIGHT ILLITERACY

UNESCO, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has earmarked half a million dollar to fight illiteracy in South Sudan.

The announcement came on Thursday at a national literacy conference organized in Juba a head of the World Literacy on 8 September.

Head of UNESCO in South Sudan, Salah Khaled said the contribution was meant to encourage other donors to give some resources to fight illiteracy in the country.

Mr Khaled called on the participants to commit themselves to the conference objectives and come up with concrete solution that would help illiterate people in South Sudan.

South Sudan has the worst literacy rate in the world with only less than 20 percent of the population literate.
