A section of Police officers at Rumbek Police Headquarters on Thursday protested due to the reduction of housing allowance in the July salaries.
The police officers rounded up the police premises, detaining the Police commissioner and shot the Rumbek County Inspector of Police when he tried to intervene.Lt. Col. Mangar Makeny Kamich, Chief Inspector of Police Rumbek Central County told Good News Radio that he received a call from the Police Headquarters to come and contain the police officers.
He explained that when he tried to enter the compound, some protesting police officers blocked him at the gate, shot and injured his arm.
The Chief added that he sustained a minor gun-shot wound and promised that the issue would be resolved soon.
Makeny said the protesters are a small group of about fifty officers in charge of operations.
He added that the protesting officers detained the Police Commissioner in his office but his security was alright.
Col. Makeny said administrative measures would later be taken against the demonstrators because the mutiny was against police ethics.
Police officers were shooting randomly forcing St. Comboni Primary School directly opposite the Headquarters to send pupils home due to fear of stray bullets.
Businessmen in Rumbek Market also closed shops for fear of riots.
