The speaker of the National Legislative Assembly has announced today that the MPs go for two months of recess amid complaints of lack of money to travel to the constituencies.
Speaker James Wani Igga told the MPs today that the administration of the Parliament had enough consultation with the President to grant recess for the MPs.He informed the recess begins today till November 2.
Mr Wani said he wrote to the finance ministry to pay the MPs two months in advance plus 5,000 Pounds for travelling allowance.
MP Victoria Adel De Dal from Warrap said the 5,000 Pounds travelling allowance was not enough given high prices in the country.
She added that the SPLM is losing popularity in the countryside because there is no connection with the grassroots.
Ms Adel said during the first recess she went to her constituency on foot visiting fishing camps but as a representative of the people it is not enough to talk to the people.
She reminded the speaker that during the war when people were sent out they were given money.
Ms Adel questioned the speaker to explain what is going on now that the country is independent.
She advised MPs to wait for money before they can go out.
