UNMISS, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, is increasingly concerned by recent violence in Jonglei that Ð it says Ð threatens the important gains made this year in restoring peace and security in the state.
The Mission said in a statement on Friday that the apparent emergence in Jonglei of an armed insurgency group linked to the militia leader David Yau Yau is worrying.
UNMISS added that Yau Yau’s forces are believed to be teaming up with groups of armed youths who have evaded the civilian disarmament operation in the state.
The Mission that rebels loyal to Yau Yau attacked army forces in Likuangole three times: on August 23, 27 and 30.
Twenty four soldiers were killed, some wounded and a number are unaccounted for.
UNMISS said it reinforced its peacekeeping strength in Likuangole and will work with the civilian authorities and the SPLA to help reduce tensions and protect civilians.
The Mission added that in order to promote lasting peace and stability in Jonglei, the unfolding security incidents must not be allowed to escalate and derail the peace process or undermine the improved security environment in the state.
