The governments of South Sudan and Sudan agreed to resume direct commercial flights between the two capitals after a six-month suspension.

Sudan stopped domestic flights between Juba and Khartoum on April 8, when the interim period concluded, and travellers between both capitals had to pass through a third country.

Undersecretary at the Sudanese foreign affairs ministry Rahamatallah Osman told reporters on Friday in Juba that both countries agreed to resume direct commercial flights between the two countries in order to put an end to the suffering of travellers of both nations, Bakhita Radio reported.

He insisted that the agreement was effective and opened ways to normalize relations between Sudan and South Sudan.

Mr Osman did not specify when direct flights resume.

The agreement was signed after two days of consultative meetings held in Juba by foreign Affairs officials from both countries.

The officials re-affirmed their commitment to promote and keep the strategic interests of their peoples away from political tensions and build on the strength of their common history, heritage and geographical ties.

Nothing was hinted about river transports and border crossings.
