The Catholic Archbishop of Juba on Tuesday paid a visit to some women’s groups at St Peter’s Chapel, in Munuki residential area.

Archbishop Paolino Lukudu Loro praised the work of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate, who run the groups.

The sisters teach women self-reliance through small businesses.

The Daughters of Mary Immaculate arrived in Juba two months ago.

They started already several groups of women to teach them basic skills to care for their families.

Seven women’s groups of 15 members each have learned to produce jam from the local fruits, including tomatoes, pineapples and pumpkins.

The Daughters of Mary Immaculate were founded in India in 1984 and work in Africa, Americas and Asia to develop the most oppressed and the under-privileged in society, particularly rural women and children.

They have opened communities in the archdiocese of Juba and diocese of Wau.
