UNMISS, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, has condemned the attack by armed rebels against South Sudanese troops in Jonglei State that claimed the lives of 24 soldiers with many more missing and injured.

Armed elements loyal to David Yau Yau attacked the SPLA in the Nanaam area of Pibor County last Thursday.

UNMISS chief Hilde F. Johnson strongly condemned the attack.

She called on all communities, institutions and actors engaged in the Jonglei peace process and related security operations to stay the course in making further progress and in consolidating the gains made to date.

UNMISS said hat the attack was deliberately intended to undermine progress made in improving the security environment and in forging inter-communal reconciliation in Jonglei State.

The UN Mission evacuated the wounded soldiers and provided aerial transport to local government officials to visit communities in the area.
