South Sudan Fire Brigade will be renamed Civil Defence Service after the permanent Constitution is approved.

National Interior Minister Alison Manani Magaya told the gathering at the official inauguration of South Sudan Fire Brigade Headquarters in Juba that the new name will come with additional duties for the force, Bakhita Radio reported.

He said the Civil Defence Service will also be responsible to rescue victims of floods, earthquakes and other natural or human-made disasters.

The Minister added the officers will receive additional training to cover new responsibilities.

Mr Magaya said his ministry will collaborate with the UN Police to spell out the duties of the Civil Defence Service in the Constitution.

The Minister concluded that his ministry wants to offer adequate transport and equipment to the brigade in order to combat fires and other emergencies in South Sudan.
