An official said Monday that floods from heavy rains have affected 307,000 people in Upper Nile, Jonglei, Unity, Warrap and Bahr El Ghazal states.

Peter Lam Both, who chairs the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, told journalists in Juba that no deaths were reported so far from the floods.

Mr Lam explained that the states relief and rehabilitation offices and NGOs have been assessing the affected communities and distributed drugs, blankets, food and mosquito nets.

He said some areas were reached by UN helicopters.

Mr Lam explained that it was very difficult for the Government to respond to present emergency situations in South Sudan.
