Wau was chosen to host Veterans Day celebrations on August 18, 2013.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit made the announcement on Thursday during the celebration of belated Veterans Day at Torit’s Freedom Square, Radio Emmanuel reported.

He says the event is to be celebrated every year to pay tribute to all who lost their lives for the liberation of South Sudan.

President Kiir said children should learn in the schools that the history of the freedom of South Sudan started with the 1955 uprising in Torit.

He stressed that those who offered their lives while struggling for the freedom of the nation and are buried in mass graves did not have enough powers to defeat Khartoum forces but were inspired to resist.

Thousands celebrated Veterans Day in Torit, including national and state ministers, advisors and many other dignitaries.

President Kiir had to cut short his visit to Eastern Equatoria to mourn the death of General Paulino Matip Nhial.
