The Republic of South Sudan is celebrating today in Torit the first Veterans Day since independence.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit presides over the celebration, Radio Emmanuel reported.

The celebration takes place in Eastern Equatoria’s capital to honour members of the Equatoria Corps who rebelled against Khartoum by staging an uprising on August 18, 1955, in Torit.

The Torit uprising inspired many to struggle for the freedom of South Sudan, achieved 56 years after the first bullet was shot for independence.

Over 200 revolutionaries of the Torit Uprising were massacred at Himodonge Hills and buried in mass graves about five kilometres south of Torit.
