A medical aid group has warned that children are dying at alarming rates in one refugee camp in Upper Nile State.

MSF emergency coordinator in Upper Nile State, John Tzanos, described the situation as a humanitarian catastrophe.

He told CRN that three to four children under five are dying every day mostly from diarrhoea.

MSF said in a press release that malnutrition is another killing factor among refugees in South Sudan’s camps.

The medical charity estimates that 27 percent of the children in Batili camp are malnourished while ten percent of those are in a severe stage of malnutrition.

Mr Tzanos said the current rains difficult the distribution of food in the camps, making air delivery the only alternative.

He is worried that the situation may get worse if emergency aid is not hurried in.

The UN estimates the almost 200,000 refugees have fled fighting in Sudan’s Blue Nile and South Kordofan states between the government and SPLM-North rebels.
