A missionary sister leaving South Sudan for another appointment is urging the government to motivate teachers through fair pay.
Rita Proscovia Nabukeera, a religious belonging to the missionary Congregation of Mary Mother of the Church, was the principal of Agangrial Comboni Primary School of Rumbek diocese for three and a half years. She told Good News Radio that she lamented the failure of the Government of South Sudan to motivate teachers, saying their salary is either too low or sometimes non-existent.
Sr Rita said some teachers in her school were not included on the government payroll.
She added that the government was wasting money with ghost teachers instead of paying the teachers who reported for duty.
Sr Rita acknowledged with appreciation the support she received from late Bishop Caesar Mazzolari during her ministry in Rumbek diocese.
She also recognized the pastoral collaboration by the Fidei Donum priests from South Korea serving at Agangrial Catholic Mission.
Sr Rita called for peace, unity and reconciliation among South Sudanese, explaining that only such values can guarantee national development and progress after several decades of civil war.
Sr Rita said she was praying for peace in South Sudan and in the hearts of its leaders.
Sr. Cecilia Lagua succeeded to Sr Rita as Principal of Agangrial Comboni Primary School. Both sisters are Ugandan nationals.
