The National Legislative Assembly wants its allowances for sittings, foreign travels and outfits restored and retained in the austerity budget 2011-2013.

MPs want one million Pounds for specialized equipments, 3.2 million Pounds to cater for services and over eight million Pounds for outfit allowances.

The parliament warned that nobody should tamper with the MPs’ constitutional rights until the Emoluments Act is amended.

Chairperson of Development Economy and Finance Committee Paul Logale Jumi said the sovereignty budget cluster recommended the restoration of sitting and foreign travel allowances for the MPs.

He added that assembly’s staff allowances for motivation, security and information and technology should be restored as well in the budget.

Mr Logale said all specific job and travels allowances should be retained and the Constituency Development Funds should be calculated based on austerity budget.

National Animal and Fisheries Minister Martin Elia Lomuro commented that the Development Economy and Finance Committee recommended cuts on civil servants emoluments and allowances to restore all the allowances for the Assembly members and staff.

He added that it contradicts the role of parliament as an executive oversight body.

Dr Elia said the committee should not cut from others to add to its budget.

The minister called for the Development Economy and Finance Committee recommendation on parliament allowances to be reviewed.
