215 girls and boys from 13 secondary schools of Yei River County on Saturday participated in a mini-marathon organized by Sudan for Christ ministries under the theme Race for Life.
The first twenty athletes received scholarships, Radio Easter reported.At the end of the race, Commissioner David Juma Augustino of Yei River County appealed to all the participants to keep on practicing in order to win the next scholarships.
Mr Juma urged other Churches present in the county to empower children through scholarships and prayer for peace.
David Lowila, director of State ministry of general education, explained that the competition aimed at identifying talents to represent South Sudan at regional and international athletic competitions.
He said theoretical education needed extra curriculum activities.
Raida Keji, a senior-three student from St. Joseph Lutaya, was the first in the girl’s race.
She said it was not her first time she won a race.
Angello Vuga, also a senior-three student from Nehemiah Secondary School, beat the boys.
