The World Council of Churches has issued a statement condemning the demolition of a church in Khartoum.

On June 18, the authorities demolished the Episcopal Parish Church of St John in Haj Yousif, Khartoum.

The WCC says the demolition is not an isolated event but part of a calculated attack on Sudanese civilians who are not Muslims.

It says at the end of April, the Sudan Council of Churches offices were closed in Nyala, South Darfur, and property confiscated, and the Sudan Evangelical Church Bible School in Gerief West, Khartoum, was destroyed and Bibles burnt in the presence of the Police.

WCC accuses the Government of protecting fundamentalists who act with impunity against innocent civilians.

The ecumenical umbrella group says it cannot remain silent in front of such horrific violation of human rights and threat to lives.
