Sanitary and hygiene conditions in Yida refugee camp of Unity State got worse due to the rapid growth of its population.

UNHCR-Bentiu head of office Marie-Helene Verney said in a statement that the growth of refugees put huge pressure on water and sanitation resources.

Yida’s population more than doubled since the end of April from 27,500 to over 58,000 refugees.

Ms Verney said Yida Refugee camp needs many more 900 latrines and six boreholes to match the pace of arrival of refugees.

She added that diarrhoea is the main cause of sickness among refugees.

Ms Verney explained that the main roads leading to Yida are closed to heavy vehicles due to the rains and delivery of humanitarian aid and drilling equipment by road is virtually impossible.

South Sudan is currently hosting close to 170,000 Sudanese refugees in Upper Nile and Unity states.

UNHCR is appealing for186 million US dollars for emergency response operations in South Sudan.
