The Catholic Church has reopened St. Daniel Comboni Catechists and Teachers Training Institute despite the ongoing conflict in Nuba Mountains.
The institute was closed in June last year when the conflict broke out in the Sudanese state of South Kordofan. The principal of the institute, Sister Cathy Solano, said the total enrolled number of students is 38, including nine women.
Sr Solano said President Omar Al-Bashir will not stop education in Nuba because children are desperate for schooling.
She added that despite warplanes flying over the institute and bombs falling nearby the four teachers and the students do not give up.
The sister said they trust in God and keep on laying the foundations for much needed education in Nuba Mountais.
Sr Solano remarked that the trainees are not only to learn for themselves but that their task will be to teach others.
Student Francis Paulino is thrilled that he was enrolled at the institute.
He said nothing will stop him from finishing his studies.
He asked students and parents not to give up education.
Mr Paulino said hunger, bombs and lack of money will not defeat education in Nuba Mountains.
Secretary General of Education Simon Kallo attended the opening of St. Daniel Comboni Catechists and Teachers Training Institute.
