The Agriculture Ministry of Western Bahr El Ghazal is distributing improved seeds to farmers and came up with a set of new policies.

Director General Paul Karlo Kamelio explained that the ministry received improved seeds to help farmer increase their crops, Voice of Hope reported.

He said the Ministry offers tractor services, plants protection, improved seeds and extension services to educate and advise farmers on techniques and methods of cultivation.

Mr Karlo added that a new committee is selling groundnut, maize and rice improved and treated seeds.

Mr Karlo stressed that so far 35 graduates on agriculture have applied to work in the state and the list was taken to the State Council of Ministers for approval.

He said it was a scandal that South Sudan still imported all its food from neighbouring countries.

Mr Karlo urged people to welcome President Kiir’s call to plant whatever they can.

Edward Lino, the Ministry’s Director of Finance who chairs the committee to sell seeds, said the seeds will be sold at prices lower than the market.

South Sudan has been hit hard by food shortage since its independent due to Sudan’s border closure and the shutdown of oil production.
