Activists from civil society groups in Eastern Equatoria are attending a four-day training on human rights protection.
The workshop aims at building and improving the capacity of participants in human rights activities in the state, Radio Emmanuel reported.State chairperson for civil society groups Jimmy Kilang said the participants will learn how to identify and report human rights abuses to the authorities in order to protect lives.
He added that the civil society activists do not have the mandate to solve human rights abuses in the state but to report them to the concerned authorities.
Mr Kilang reiterated that the workshop has been prompted by frequent incidents of human rights abuses in the state that led to many deaths.
He admitted that some cultural practices have greatly contributed to human rights abuses.
Mr Kilang urged people never to give a chance to cultural practices that are against the right of individuals and strongly protest against them.
UNMISS Human Rights department organized the workshop being attended by two participants from each county of Eastern Equatoria State.
