A growing number of children and adults seek help in a local hospital in the Nuba Mountains due to problems of malnutrition.

It is the result of the one year old war in the Sudanese state of South Kordofan.

One of the most severe cases in the children ward is Mariam, a girl of five years old who only weights some ten kilograms.

The girl from Kacha in Kagduli County suffers not only from malnutrition but also has open wounds and sores on her buttock.

When Mariam sees an adult she cries because she fears her painful buttock will be touched and treated.

Her mother Asha Kaldum says that the condition of the child is improving slightly after an operation was done.

Ms Kaldum added that her child had to be fed through the nose but now Miriam is eating by herself.

Another proof of malnutrition is the increased number of children that fall out of trees where they look for wild fruits to ease their hunger.

Khadija Andar, a woman from Ommdorain locality brought her daughter, ten year old Leila, to the hospital after she fell out of a tree and broke her arm.

During the more than 100 kilometers journey to the hospital Leila’s arm got infected and the doctor needed to amputate it.
