The Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba announced this morning that the institution will reopen two weeks after he student occupying hostels leave the premises.

Ê

The University of Juba has remained closed since the end of March when a dispute between two students spread into regional and inter-ethnic violence, Bakhita Radio reported.

Professor Aggrey Abate said the University’s living quarters are overcrowded with no running water. Lacking drainage systems and very expensive diesel make the running of the campus expensive and unsustainable.

He said these factors encouraged students to engage in demonstrations, rallies and endless discussions about their welfare instead of concentrating on their studies.

Prof Abate said the University will no longer offer accommodation and meals to the students.

He announced that the hostel buildings are to be used as colleges, laboratories, workshops, offices and stores.

Prof Abate explained that the University will reopen two weeks from the date when students leave the hostels.

He added that students need an identity card to enter the University premises.
